SUP racing involves a lot of traveling. Especially, when you are dedicated like Garrett. For the past two summers, Garrett and I have traveled to almost all the races in Florida along with a few in California. This year Garrett will have the opportunity to venture out and experience places like Canada, Connecticut, and New York.
Right now, he is trying to attend many races that are apart of 3 different race series. The Salt Life Cup is a season-long accumulation of points earned at all WPA National races. Here is a link showing the schedule and more details http://worldpaddleassociation.com/2016-race-to-the-salt-life-cup/
Another important race series that is held in Florida is called The Fastest in Florida series. Garrett currently has the title from winning the series last year. The first race of the series was the previous race on March 12th.
This series is based on a point system:
- They crown a champion based upon the best five performances at any of Florida’s eight major SUP races.
- In order to keep it simple, we are not using any age divisions.
- Divisions are 14’ and 12’6 for men and a 12’6 for women. (Garrett is in the 14’ men’s division)
- First place in each race is awarded 100 points, second place gets 99 points, and third place 98 points, and so on. The points are based on your overall finish in that race, regardless of age group
- They add together your best five finishes, so it is not required to make every race.
Below is our race schedule for the upcoming season. The schedule shows whether the race is a part of the WPA Salt Life series, Fastest in Florida series, or Triple Crown Series. The schedule also shows the date, location, and name of the race.
I am pretty excited about traveling this summer to old and new places. Traveling has always been my dream, and I finally get to travel and be apart of something new and exciting.
